The 2022 FIFA World Cup continued Tuesday on FOX with Morocco defeating Spain in a penalty shootout, 3-0, at Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar in the tournament’s second-to-last match of the round of 16.
Later, Portugal will face Switzerland in Tuesday’s second knockout-stage game (11 a.m. ET, FOX). The winners will advance to play each other in the quarterfinals, which conclude Saturday, Dec. 10.

Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi had a free kick, but his shot was a tad north of the crossbar.

25′: Potential disaster – and missed opportunity
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and defender Nayef Aguerd couldn’t connect on a pass, and Spain nearly turned it into a goal. Shortly after the turnover, Gavi had his shot deflected off the crossbar and then Ferran Torres‘ shot was rejected out of play.
Ultimately, Spain was called for offside.

Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui got off a thundering shot, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón stunted the attempt.

It was a first half of missed opportunities for both teams.
This time around, Aguerd’s header was a little high and wide.

Spain forward Dani Olmo got off a blazing shot, but Bono wasn’t having any of it.

Spain made a pair of substitutions, bringing in forward Álvaro Morata for Marco Asensio and midfielder Carlos Soler for Gavi.

Morocco made its first substitution, bringing in forward Abdessamad Ezzalzouli for midfielder Sofiane Boufal.

Spain defender Aymeric Laporte was given a yellow card after challenging Hakimi.

Hakimi got the ball within striking distance for Morocco, but forward Walid Cheddira was unable to punch through a contested shot.

Spain forward Nico Williams appeared to have a golden scoring opportunity, but Morocco defender Sofyan Amrabat came through with a clutch block.
90+4′: Game-saving denial!
Bono pulled off his most timely denial of the World Cup for Morocco in the closing seconds of the second half, as he rejected Olmo’s shot attempt.
The match went to extra time.

Morata was unable to convert a header off a pass from Williams.

Cheddira almost had the first goal of the game, but his shot was sent sideways by Simon.

Defender Jawad El Yamiq knocked the ball out of harm’s way for Morocco.

Morocco connected on its first two penalty kicks, while Spain missed its first two. After each missed its third try, Morocco put the game away on its fourth kick.
