“When My Eye Broke…”: Fallen Champion Reminisces the Time He ‘Begged the Doctor’ To Keep Fighting Despite Horrific Injury Against Errol Spence Jr

The previous year witnessed an exciting welterweight contest between Errol Spence Jr. and Yordenis Ugas. It delighted fans and went down as one of the most electrifying showdowns of the year, but at the same time, it ended on a very disappointing note. The boxing world always wants to spectate thrilling slugfests, but they never like to see severe damage that sends fighters out of the game for years.

Ugas, who showcased a warrior’s mentality at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, is out of the ring since his last meet with ‘The Truth’ in April. The undefeated welterweight known for his heavy hands stepped into the ring with treacherous intentions and inflicted a horrifying injury on Ugas. Spence’s repetitive head hunting left his opponent with a broken eye. But everyone praised Ugas as he didn’t let the eye injury stop him.

When the Cuban’s eye became severely injured in the 7th round, doctors suggested that he withdraw. But the star boxer clarified his intention that he was not there to give up easily. He wanted Spence to put in the effort before taking his title. The man fought his heart out and went on for a few more rounds before he was stopped in the 10th round. He was in pure dismay. Despite the gruesome injury, he wanted to continue and complete all rounds, but doctors and referees decided that he took enough damage to walk away from the match.

Since this fight, Ugas has been in recovery, but has remained active on social media. Recently, he took to Twitter and wrote a tweet recalling the fight that sent him on a long layoff and praised the champion of the night Spence Jr.

Quoting tweeting the video clip of his fight uploaded by a fan, Ugas shared the highlight of the fight and wrote, “#SpenceUgas I’m proud of this fight. Fighting against one of the best, in a competitive fight until round 7 when my eye broke, but I never gave up, I fought 4 more rounds with one eye and begged the doctor in round 10 to let me keep fighting. Won the best man that.”

Definitely, Ugas should be proud of the fight. Though he could not win it, he stunned the IBF and WBC title holder Spence Jr. on a number of occasions. Unfortunately, it was an injury that changed the course. Over the course of the fight, Spence unleashed some devastating punches, which helped him collect his third title in the division.
