Katie Couric Says She Was Scammed by Someone Pretending to Have a Rat in Their Toilet

Katie Couric shared a hilariously wholesome text exchange she recently had with a stranger who didn’t believe it was her…or so she thought.

On December 14, the famed journalist was surprised by a text from a Brooklyn woman named Susan who reached out to the celeb by mistake. “A rat was in my toilet,” the very New York text read. “I am beside myself! I’m contacting the super.” This kicked off a lengthy text exchange between Couric and the stranger who didn’t believe who she was speaking to.

“Yeah and I am Madonna,” Susan in 19N first responded when Couric shared her identity. In fact, she didn’t believe it until Couric sent a selfie to confirm her identity. Couric documented the exchange on Instagram Stories, which included updates on Splinter the rat and a Christmas invite to Susan’s Brooklyn abode. Couric even tried to get Susan to stop smoking! She was invested!

Unfortunately, it appears Katie Couric is the one who didn’t know who she was texting. “I am so disappointed,” Couric shared in an update alongside the entire text exchange on December 16. “I think this is a scam. A friend of mine got the same text. I don’t think Susan is real. I’m so sad. (A famous friend of mine got the same text and immediately blocked it.) But look how this brought us together? So there’s that. Take care Susan, and even if you’re not really Susan, I hope if you do smoke that you’ll quit. 🥲💔”

Even though Susan may not be real, her texts made for an entertaining viral moment. This is even funnier than the “humblingexchange between Jennifer Garner and a stranger back in October 2021. When reaching out to former Alias costar Carl Lumbly, Garner accompanied her text with a selfie for proof…unfortunately, she was the one with the wrong number.
