His greatest catch! Mets pitcher Edwin Díaz and wife Nashaly Mercado have been by each other’s side for more than a decade.
The Puerto Rico natives began dating in September 2012 — the same year he was drafted by the Seattle Mariners. While the pitcher went off to pursue his baseball career, he and Mercado pursued their love long distance.
“There are so many women in the world and the only one I fell in love with was you my love,” Díaz wrote in Spanish alongside a selfie of the couple in November 2013. “I love you so much you are my life ❤️❤️❤️.”
Three years later, a few weeks after Díaz made his MLB debut, the pair announced they were expecting their first child together. Mercado posted a pic from her baby shower and the closer lovingly commented on the snap.
“Beautiful my love God bless today, tomorrow and always my queen 😘😘😘 I love you heart @nashalymercadoo and we are crazy for the baby to arrive 😍😍,” he gushed in Spanish.
A few months later, the pair welcomed their first child, son Jahel. The little one made his Instagram debut in August 2016 with Mercado posting a collage of pics of her partner and newborn. Following the end of the 2016 season, the family of three were reunited and posed for a sweet selfie. “Family 👪 @nashalymercadoo I loved my family 🙏🏿🙏🏿.” Díaz captioned the pic.
Two years later, Díaz was traded to the New York Mets in December 2018. Shortly before relocating to New York City for the season, Mercado and her longtime love tied the knot in a tropical wedding.
“The most important day of our lives ❤️ A dream come true Thank God 🙏🏻❤️,” the bride gushed in February 2019.
After Díaz completed his first season with the Mets, the twosome announced they were expanding their family in December 2020.
“SURPRISE 🎉🎉🎉Here I share our happiness 🥰 Just as we planned it a long time ago, it went well for us 😍 ,” Mercado wrote via Instagram at the time. “YESSSSSS I’m pregnant 🤰🏻🤗 we’re waiting for our second gift from God 🤩 Jahel is very happy just like mom and dad. Baby, WE LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUU 🥰 👨 👩 👦👶🏻.”
While the duo didn’t announce the arrival of the newest addition to the Díaz family, son Sebastian made his Instagram debut in September 2021 as the family of four posed for a picture at the Mets’ stadium.
In March 2023, Díaz played for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. While celebrating a big win against the Dominican Republic, the two-time all-star severely injured his knee and had to get surgery which put him out for the remainder of the season. Mercado shared an update on her husband’s condition after he got out of the operation.
“Thank you all for your kind messages, good vibes and positive comments. We prepare ourselves for a lot of things but NEVER for these situations and how it hurts when they happen,” she wrote via Instagram alongside a photo of Díaz smiling in his hospital bed. “Husband you are a warrior yesterday you gave it ALL to bring joy to our country I didn’t end as we expected but thank God you’re fine that’s the most important thing.”
