Also known as skunk-stripe hair or cotton candy hair, Gemini hair is the new trend that has indecisive salon-goers giddy. Instead of choosing just one hair color, you get to have two!
As for the name? If you’re familiar with astrology, then you know that this nickname stems from the Gemini sign’s representation of twins. The twins stand for the dual-naturedness of those born under a Gemini sun, hence the name of this dual-sided hair color.
And as for why this trend is currently taking off, Jessica Scott Santo, a hair colorist and Moroccanoil color ambassador, has a simple answer: “Social media.” It makes sense. How boring would it be to scroll your feeds endlessly without seeing something new and creative like Gemini hair? This attention-grabbing two-toned hair trend is sure to grab the attention of For You page viewers.
Ahead, Santo breaks down everything you should know about Gemini hair, especially if you want to try it yourself.

Know what you want and don’t want.
It’s pretty much common sense that bringing a reference photo to the salon is helpful. Photos are a great way to communicate to your stylist exactly what you want, especially because things can get lost in translation with just words.
“Your ashy is not my ashy,” explains Santo, a hair color might seem cool-toned to the untrained eye, but to a professional colorist, the hair color in question may still have some warmth to it. To take that to the next level and make sure there is absolutely no misinterpretation, Santo recommends bringing images of what you don’t want too. That way, the colorist knows what not to give you.
To keep hair healthy and vibrant, cold water is the way to go when you’re washing. “You have to wash with ice-cold water,” says Santo. “Hot will have your money melting down the drain.” This is because icy water temps keep the hair cuticle closed, thereby preventing the color from running.
In order to achieve some of the trendy colors, it requires bleaching hair to the extreme. Like, level 10 is the highest you can go before the hair breaks off, and if you want a more pastel fashion color, you sometimes have to go there. Because of that, your hair is going to be quite vulnerable and will need lots of TLC. A deep-conditioning treatment like Bleach Reincarnation Mask will help keep hair healthy. It packs protein, sunflower oil, and lactic acid to strengthen and hydrate in 20 minutes.
The fade is real.
If you opted for this trend because of your indecisive nature, this probably won’t affect you too much (because you’ll be ready to try the next best thing), but it is important to note that vivid colors like this will fade quickly. In addition to washing with cold water, Santo says you should limit the frequency that you wash too. “The more you wash it, the more pigment is going to come out,” she says. To help keep color bold and bright, try color depositing masks or conditioners like the ones from Moroccanoil and Overtone.
Try a temporary.
If you’re keen on attempting this trend but not too thrilled about making a major commitment, give temporary a go. Not only is it not forever if you wind up not liking it, but if you do, it can help you decide which colors to go for. Good Dye Young offers several formulas like its I’m Bored semitemporary color, which is basically like makeup for your hair. It lasts two to six washes and gives you a nice taste of what living the Gemini hair life would be like.
Pick your color.
There are an infinite number of color combos to choose from. Maybe you want to do blue and green for a cool-toned moment or pink and purple for more of a unicorn-y vibe. Santo says a fun combo would be copper and red because the rust shades are having a major moment right now. Plus, they’re not too far off from natural colors if you’re worried about being too over-the-top.
And don’t count yourself out yet if you’re intimidated by the more out-there colors. This trend can still be for you; just stick with neutrals. The simplest way to tiptoe into Gemini hair would be by leaving one half of your head your natural color hair and bleaching the other side. Or if your hair is already gray or blonde, you could just dye one half brown or black. The options are endless!
