What happens in Tokyo doesn’t stay in Tokyo. Emily Ratajkowski and Harry Styles learned that the hard way when they were photographed kissing in Japan’s capital in March. The coupling took fans completely by surprise, but the 29-year-old pop star and the 31-year-old model have kept things pretty quiet ever since.
In an April interview with Spanish Vogue, Ratajkowski said she “didn’t expect” their moment to go viral. “In general, there’s a reason certain celebrities live in LA, hire security, don’t go to public restaurants,” she said, per Elle. “It’s very bizarre to have certain experiences and then have the whole world know and comment on them.”
So, are they dating or not? Here’s a timeline of whatever is going on between Emily Ratajkowski and Harry Styles.
2014: During his One Direction days, Styles calls Ratajkowski his celebrity crush in an interview. It’s called manifesting.
July 2022: Sometime in the summer, Ratajkowski divorces Bear-McClard following cheating rumors. The former couple shares a one-year-old son, Sylvester Apollo Bear. “They split recently. It was Em’s decision,” a source tells People. “She is doing okay. She is strong and focused on her son. She loves being a mom.”
November 19, 2022: People reports that Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde are “taking a break” after two years of dating. “He’s still touring and is now going abroad. She is focusing on her kids and her work in LA,” one source tells the publication. “It’s a very amicable decision.”
September 2022—February 2023: For months, the model is linked to various suitors, including Brad Pitt, Hollywood Casanova Pete Davidson, and comedian Eric André. In January, Ratajkowski admits that paparazzi make dating difficult. “Any time I go on another date, everybody knows,” she said on her High Low podcast. “So the other guys I’m dating see it, and it has been kind of difficult because of course they’re like, ‘Didn’t talk to her last night,’ and then there’s pictures of me out to dinner with someone else. It sucks.”

March 9, 2023: During an episode of the podcast Going Mental With Eileen Kelly, Ratajkowski says she’s dating someone who’s “kind of great.” She adds, “I’m hoping that dating someone that has more of their own life will prevent the issues I had before.”
March 25, 2023: While Styles is in Japan for his latest Love on Tour performances, the “As it Was” singer makes out with Ratajkowski in full view of witnesses, based on photos and video obtained by The Daily Mail.
March 26, 2023: An anonymous source tells People that Ratajkowski and Styles had been “friendly for a while” before their public kiss. “Harry and Emily know each other,” the source said, adding that Ratajkowski is also “friendly” with Styles’s ex, Olivia Wilde.
April 6, 2023: Ratajkowski keeps her lips sealed during an interview with The Los Angeles Times, published on April 6. “There’s a million insane, inaccurate things about my relationships [that are said],” Ratajkowski told writer Amy Kaufman in a voice note sent from Japan. “I’m definitely still not thinking about guys. Although, yeah. You know, sometimes things just happen.”
April 20, 2023: In a Spanish Vogue interview, Ratajkowski further discussed dating in the public eye. “This is the first time in a long time I’ve been in a dating stage,” she said, per Elle, “The interest there is in that particular area is very strange. Not that I’m surprised, but it’s a tiny slice of my life… Most of my life is focused on my son and my work. But I guess these issues don’t inspire the same flashy headlines. The invasion of private aspects is very hard for me.”
When asked about the way media pits women against each other (most recently Ratajkowski and Styles’ ex), the model replied, “It’s more of the same. I feel bad for Olivia [Wilde] because she has had to suffer this situation on several occasions.”
